Presidential Inauguration
The Presidential Inauguration Day in 2025 will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025. This is the official date set by the U.S. Constitution for the swearing-in of the President and Vice President every four years. During the Presidential Inauguration in January 2025, there will be many activities and events in Washington, D.C., that both locals and visitors can enjoy. However, certain restrictions and security measures will also be in place due to the high-profile nature of the event. Here's what to expect:
Inauguration Day Events and Activities
- Inauguration Ceremony: The main event takes place at the U.S. Capitol, where the President and Vice President will be sworn in. This is a ticketed event, and tickets are usually distributed through members of Congress.
- National Mall Viewing: The ceremony is broadcast live on large screens along the National Mall, and this area is open to the public for free, but space is limited. Arrive early to secure a good spot.
- Inaugural Parade: Following the swearing-in, a parade takes place along Pennsylvania Avenue, featuring military units, marching bands, and floats. It stretches from the U.S. Capitol to the White House. Viewing areas are available for the public, though sections may be ticketed.
- Inaugural Balls and Events: The evening of the inauguration includes several official inaugural balls and parties. Tickets for these are often exclusive or require an invitation.
Security and Restrictions
Due to the large crowds and the presence of high-level officials, there will be significant security measures in place:
- Street Closures: Many streets, especially near the U.S. Capitol, National Mall, White House, and Pennsylvania Avenue, will be closed to vehicles, and traffic will be heavily restricted. Plan to use public transportation or walk.
- Public Transportation Changes: The Metro will be operational, but some stations near the event may be closed, and routes may be modified. Expect heavy crowds on public transport, especially near the Capitol and downtown areas.
- Security Checkpoints: If you plan to attend any of the events in person, there will be security checkpoints, especially at ticketed events and along the parade route. Expect bag checks and metal detectors.
- Prohibited Items: For public safety, items like backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, and weapons (including pocket knives) will not be allowed. There will also be restrictions on liquids and other personal items. Check the official list of prohibited items closer to the event.
- Restricted Areas: Certain areas around the Capitol and White House will be restricted and only accessible to officials or ticket holders.
Non-Inaugural Events

Tourism in Washington, D.C., will likely be affected by restrictions in the days immediately following the Presidential Inauguration on January 20, 2025. Here’s how it might be impacted:
Continued Security Measures
- Increased Security: Security will remain heightened for several days after the inauguration, especially around key government buildings like the U.S. Capitol, White House, and along Pennsylvania Avenue. Expect to see a strong presence of law enforcement, National Guard troops, and security checkpoints in certain areas.
- Street Closures: Some streets near the Capitol, the White House, and downtown areas may remain closed or restricted for a few days following the inauguration. These closures could affect access to popular tourist sites such as the National Mall and monuments.
- Public Transportation Adjustments: The Metro system and bus routes may still have modified services or station closures around key security areas. Delays or rerouting could occur, especially near Capitol Hill and downtown.
Crowds and Event Cleanup
- Crowds: Even after Inauguration Day, crowds of visitors, protestors, and other participants might linger for several days. Popular tourist areas like the National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, and surrounding monuments could be busier than usual.
- Cleanup: Crews will be cleaning up after the large inauguration crowds. This could mean restricted access to certain parts of the National Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, and other areas near the parade route and Capitol.
Access to Major Attractions
- Smithsonian Museums and National Mall: The Smithsonian museums typically remain open during and after the inauguration, but areas of the National Mall might still be restricted or crowded. Monuments like the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument should be accessible, but check for any specific closures.
- White House: The White House is often off-limits during the inauguration and the transition period. Tours may not resume immediately after January 20.
- U.S. Capitol: Tours of the Capitol building will likely remain restricted in the days following the inauguration due to ongoing security concerns. Check with your local congressional office for updates on tour availability.
Protests and Demonstrations
- Washington, D.C., often sees demonstrations and gatherings around the inauguration, and these may continue in the days following the event. These can result in further road closures or restricted access in certain areas.
Alternative Tourist Activities
- Museums and Cultural Sites: Aside from areas near the White House and Capitol, many museums and galleries, such as the National Gallery of Art, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and other Smithsonian museums, will remain open and accessible.
- Monuments and Memorials: Popular monuments such as the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial should be open, but parts of the National Mall may still have temporary barriers or restricted access.
Tips for Visitors:
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on local news, government updates, and the National Park Service website for updates on closures and security measures.
- Plan for Delays: If you plan to visit DC in the days following the inauguration, expect some delays and restrictions around the city. Try to use public transportation where possible.
